3D laser scan of the Lorenzenhof in the Gutach Open-Air Museum
A few weeks ago, we had the unique opportunity to completely scan a listed building using laser measurement. Our colleagues Jannis Karrer and Manfred Götz met with Evelyn Schmitz and Patrick Mache from Leica Geosystems at the entrance to the Vogtsbauernhof open-air museum deep in the Black Forest shortly before 6 o'clock in the morning. Two Leica BLK360 cameras were in use at the same time to ensure that the large "Lorenzenhof" farm dating back to 1608 was ready before the first visitors arrived. Even up in the hayloft, our two scanning professionals dared to climb the high ladder to capture the old building in its well-preserved splendor completely in 3D.
The Lorenzenhof, named after its owner Lorenz Gebert, is a so-called Kinzigtäler house and originally comes from Oberwolfach in Gewann. This type of house has a hollow space, the so-called "Nußbühne", between the ceiling of the parlor and the attic above. Nuts were dried and tools were stored here. With a floor area of 25 x 12 m and a height of 13 m, the courtyard is one of the more spacious and is a sign of the prosperity of the large farmers of the time. The hipped roof, which was initially thatched, is typical of the Black Forest. A wooden structure made of spruce and fir was placed on top of the stone-walled barns. This ends in a generous roof truss, which keeps the farm dry even in heavy rain. We learned to appreciate this during the surveying work.
With the digital twin we created, the open-air museum in Gutach now has a highly accurate replica of the entire Lorenzenhof, just in case. Reconstructions can now be easily created on the model and ordered from the carpenter. The carpenter can then use the point cloud in Dietrich's to faithfully reproduce the wooden components to be replaced.
